About Us

Daden Limited is an independent consultancy focussed on virtual humans (chatbots/conversational AI), virtual worlds (the Metaverse and virtual reality) and virtual war (wargaming). Our principal, David Burden, has over 25 years experience in each of these areas, and his books include Virtual Humans, and The Metaverse: A Critical Introduction (both published by Taylor & Francis). Recognition and Achievements

Daden projects have twice won the Times Higher Education's IT Awards for innovation in training and education, and have also won awards at the US Federal Virtual Worlds Conference. Daden chatbots have passed two covert Turing Tests, and Daden were also finalists in the BCS Machine Intelligence competition.

Daden was founded in 2004 in Birmingham by David Burden, and now operates as David's own personal and independent consultancy.

Practice-led Consultancy

Whilst we enjoy researching and writing, we also realise that you learn best through actually doing things - whether its playing wargames, talking to bots or experiencing virtual environments. The trick is to find the right balance between them!

Chatbots and Conversational AI

Daden have worked on chatbots and conversational AI since the mid 1990s. We have worked on many generations of chatbots from AIML and Chatscript-based systems, through intent-based systems to the current generation of LLM and RAG systems. We have a particular interest in the use of Knowledge Graphs to help chatbots actually understand what they are talking about. David's view on how to create a virtual human are captured in the 2019 book Virtual Humans from Taylor & Francis.

Virtual Worlds and the Metaverse

David likewise created his first 3D virtual world in the mid 1990s. During the 2000s Daden were one of the key innovators and developers using Second Life with education and governmental clients. In the 2010s Daden's Unity based Trainingscape was one of the first no-code development tools for immersive learning. David now focusses on WebGL/WebXR browser-based virtual environments which enable VR experience to be delivered to web, mobile or headset without any downloads. David is currently series co-editor for External link opens in new tab or windowThe Metaverse Series from Taylor & Francis, and lead author on External link opens in new tab or windowThe Metaverse: A Critical Introduction.
